Ron's Hamburgers and Chili

On a beautiful Friday evening my wife and I decided to take a drive. We ended up in Broken Arrow on some back streets off the main highway and crossed *hole-in-the-wall place called Ron's Hamburgers and Chili. Now, as you will find out from this site, I am always interested in finding the best places to eat hamburgers. I have no problems trying new or different places, as this just helps my lifelong quest. So we whip into this little parking lot and end up parking down by a gas station and walk to the door proclaiming Ron's. Some info about the restaurant itself; for a hole-in-the-wall place it was very nice and clean with a great local atmosphere. At this time of the evening and within just 2 hours of it closing, it was jammed pack with more folks coming in. This is your first indication something is good here.

Now to the food. Ron's chili is rated 4 Stars by the International Chili Society and their Sausage Hamburger has been declared the "Best Burger in Oklahoma" by some local magazine. Well, that is great and all but I came looking for the best HAMBURGER. To me, a sausage burger (they mix sausage and hamburger together to make the patty) is not a true hamburger, although they are good if you like a little spice in your burgers. My wife tried the Fried Okra and swears it was excellent, I wouldn't know since I don't eat that kind of stuff.

I have the feeling that their hamburgers were designed to be smothered in their famous chili and when eaten that way, they are pretty good. But, I am in search of the good ole fashioned hamburger that you can pick up with your hands and eat like a man. So, with that in mind I graded Ron's Jumbo Cheeseburger (hey, cheeseburger / hamburger all the same to me :)).

Lets break it down:

  • Bun: Toasted and warm, though a bit soggy.
  • Meat: Good circumference, close to the 5" mark but lacking in thickness, juiciness and flavor.
  • Tomatoes: Two very nice slices of tomato, both at 1/4" thick (almost as thick as the meat).
  • Lettuce: Chopped lettuce that was still crispy and a good portion of it.
  • Pickles: Yes, 5 dill pickle slices at or around 1/8" thick. Nothing cheap here folks!
  • Onions: Chopped onions that were grilled with the meat, these were good.
  • Cheese: Full slice with good coverage and melted to perfection.

The burger came already sliced in half. I personally don't care for someone slicing my burger in two parts, but it don't stop me from eating it. The home fries that I ordered (if you go to Ron's be sure to get only a half-order unless you have like 6 people to feed). This was a huge amount of fresh fries and were dang good.

Overall Score:
Ron's Hamburger & Chili Jumbo Cheeseburger rated 2.49 Stars out of a possible 5.00 on the Mox's Burger Buster Scale.

*Hole-in-the-wall: These are usually found in towns or cities in shopping plazas. You drive by and see a big sign with a bunch of store names on them and one happens to include a cafe or restaurant set back in the corner somewhere. They don't stand out on their own like a major fast food chain.
